The Theatrum Gedanense Foundation aims to reconstruct a Shakespearean theatre in Gdansk on the historic site of the original, which was built in the early seventeenth century. The original playhouse was a remarkable example of the city’s culture in the period of it’s highest development, a culture the reconstructed playhouse will both commemorate and revive. In the summer of 1993, the Renaissance tradition of British actors coming to the Dominican Fair in Gdansk was revived. This event has turned into the International Shakespeare Festival, organized annually at the beginning of August and has become one of the most important summer festivities for the Gdansk region. The Foundation also promotes Art and Drama in a more general way, funding (and encouraging through other means) art auctions, galleries, academic symposia, and hosting international events attended by heads of state and other notable figures.
