Mixed News for the Gdansk Shipyard

Recently the Gdansk Shipyard received both good and bad news from the European Union. The good news: they may not have to pay back the 750m zloty public subsidy. The bad news: the shipyard may face a strike. The owner of the shipyard, ISD Polska, is still in talks with the European Commission over its demand for the shipyard either to pay back the 750m zloty or cut its capacity by two thirds. If the latter were to happen, Brussels would decide a capacity limit for the shipyard, and the rest of the shipyard would be used by another industry.

But all this talk of reduced capacity and debt has the shipyard's present workers riled up. Trade unions representing the workers say there is no sufficient social package for them. The union has threatened a strike - just one more problem the shipyard's owners have to address in the coming month.
