German Prime Minister Angela Merkel met with Polish PM Donald Tusk in Gdansk to discuss eastward expansion of the EU and the EU treaty. Despite Ireland's recent rejection of the Lisbon Treaty, Merkel stressed the importance of the treaty. Tusk agreed, stating that despite Ireland's rejection, all the EU states that have accepted the treaty should continue to support it.

Merkel also gave her support to the Polish-Swedish Eastern Partnership partnership project, which primarily concerns the EU's eastern expansion and its eastern borders. Bilateral relations between Poland and Germany were also discussed by the two politicians.
