Gdansk is in the running for a regional office of the European parliament.

"[It} would be a great symbol of the Solidarity Movement and the position of our city," said Pawel Abramowicz, the city major said.

50 Polish MEPs will vote on which city is granted the honour: besides Gdansk, Krakow, Poznan, Lublin, Rzeszow and Bialystok are also candidates.

Given that the MEPs hail from a good cross-section of the country, it is uncertain which way the voting will go. The Poles have yet to decide on the most fair manner of conducting the ballot.
