Presidential Couple Laid to Rest

Poland bid farewell to the presidential couple on Sunday after one of the blackest weeks since the communist era. 96 people perished on the flight to Smolensk on 10th April, amongst them 88 leaders of key state and national institutions. President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were laid to rest in the hallowed crypts of Wawel Cathedral, Krakow, a decision that initially sparked vociferous debate, but later lulled out of respect for the fallen. Although the official week of mourning is now over, many more funerals are scheduled over the next few days, and the acting president, Bronislaw Komorowski, must now appoint dozens of new leaders across a plethora of institutions.
