Greens Sue Government

Poland’s Greens have sued the State Treasury, demanding reparation for damages caused by the felling of seven old oaks in the Bialowieza Forest nature reserve, which lies in the east of the country.

Joanna Bulawa from the “Gaja” Greens Federation said they want the State Treasury to finance the planting of new trees to compensate for the oxygen produced by the more than 100 year old oaks, which were felled about two years ago.

The Greens argue that the trees were cut down illegally by the local forest authorities. But the case was dropped after an expert said that the oaks were felled to clean the border area and that the action did not harm the ecological system. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm that trees in the last primeval forest in Europe are recklessly cut down for economic purposes.
