Tragic Turn To Memorial Day
Commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the first transport of prisoners to the Auschwitz concentration camp took a sad turn when one of the passengers, an 85 year old survivor of Auschwitz died suddenly on the Train of Memory. The commemorations began yesterday in the southern city of Tarnow from where the Train was to take scouts and survivors to the site of the concentration camp. It was from there that the Nazis had gathered 728 young Poles, mostly soldiers who hadn’t escaped after the German onslaught in 1939, to be sent to Auschwitz. It became the biggest graveyard in World War Two and the most infamous site of the Holocaust.
